Wales overpower South Africa in WXV Global Series opener at Cardiff Arms Park

Wales produced an eight-try victory over South Africa at Cardiff Arms Park in their WXV Global Series opener on Friday, returning to the winners’ column after a run of nine Tests without a victory.

The result came against a Springboks side ranked three places above them in the world and followed bold selection calls from coach Sean Lynn, who had told his players to be brave in the build-up and moved scrum-half Keira Bevan to 10. Co-captain Alex Callender returned from injury and produced a player-of-the-match performance, while Courtney Keight, recently crowned Welsh Rugby Writers' player of the year, finished as Wales’ first try-scorer.

Wales dominated the first half, scoring six tries and capitalising on South African indiscipline. Courtney Keight opened the scoring after Georgia Evans and Sisilia Tuipulotu made the hard yards, Keight cutting inside to touch down on the left; Kelsey Jones’ turnover then launched a second try as Evans popped a neat ball back inside for Tuipulotu.

South Africa’s only early score came from Felicia Jacobs after a dominant scrum on Wales’ five-metre line, but Wales continued to press. Amy Williams nearly finished following Lisa Neumann’s grubber kick before Seren Lockwood reached the breakdown and darted over, and hooker Lindelwa Gwala was sent to the sin bin for being offside in the build-up.

Maisie Davies used her power to score her first international try and secure Wales’ bonus point, and enforced half-back changes followed when Lockwood failed to return from a head injury assessment, with Bevan reverting to scrum-half and Lleucu George coming on at 10. Freya Bell came close from a five-metre driving lineout before Kelsey Jones crossed.

The first half was completed with Wales 38-5 ahead after a period in which lock Daniele Lochner was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle on Kate Williams, a card that would later be upgraded to a 20-minute red, and Neumann cruised over from her new full-back position.

Sisilia Tuipulotu added a second score early in the second half to extend Wales’ lead to 40 points, but South Africa responded; Maria Tshiremba scored her third try in two appearances and Maceala Samboya finished a move begun by Aphiwe Ngwevu’s powerful running. Amy Williams’ feet and strength kept the ball alive for Alex Callender to finish another Welsh try. Front-row forwards Shanelle Williams and Elan Jones came off the bench to make their debuts.
