West Indies to enter 2027 World Cup Qualifier after Afghanistan win in Belfast

West Indies will have to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup through the tournament route after Afghanistan’s victory over Ireland in Belfast confirmed the teams taking automatic spots, a development reported on August 11, 2026.

Under the qualification rule, the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings on September 30, 2026 — excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe — will earn automatic entry to the World Cup. Afghanistan’s win in Belfast moved them into that top-eight group, leaving West Indies, currently ranked 10th, outside the automatic places. West Indies still have two ODIs against India before the cut-off date, but even two wins will not be enough to reach the automatic qualification bracket. As a result, they will need to compete in the 10-team Qualifier.

West Indies previously faced the qualification route for the 2023 ODI World Cup; after finishing fifth in the Super Six stage of that pathway they failed to make the tournament, which was the first time in their history they missed the World Cup. That absence affected subsequent tournaments: West Indies also missed the 2025 Champions Trophy, having last featured in that event in 2013.

The 2027 pathway includes a 10-team Qualifier in February 2027. Under the revised system, the winner of that Qualifier will secure direct entry into the second round of the 2027 World Cup, while the teams finishing second, third and fourth will enter a three-team Super Series, with the winner of that series also progressing to the second round.

The ICC Board approved the format in July as part of changes intended to make the 14-team World Cup shorter and more competitive. Some Associate nations have raised concerns about the new structure, saying it reduces direct opportunities to reach the World Cup.

West Indies must now prepare for another qualification campaign, with the team set to compete in the 10-team Qualifier in February 2027 for a chance to reach the 2027 World Cup.
