Wigan beat Wakefield 26-12 in a Super League fixture in Wigan on 21 August 2026 to register a 12th consecutive league victory and move to the top of the table. Their place at the summit could be brief, with Leeds Rhinos due the chance to reclaim top spot on Sunday in York.

The result set a new club record for most consecutive league wins in the summer era, surpassing previous runs that reached 11 in 1998, 2013 and 2023. In each of those seasons Wigan were ultimately crowned Super League champions, and the report referenced Old Trafford in October as the season finale. The victory continued a sustained run of form for the Warriors and arrived against a Wakefield side that has been strong this season.

Bevan French opened the scoring for Wigan with a long-range break after a Wakefield attack broke down, beginning a sequence of three tries in nine minutes that put the home side in control. Liam Marshall scored twice in the corner, each time converted by Adam Keighran, who also added a penalty on the half-time hooter, taking Wigan into the interval with a 20-point lead.

Wakefield responded after half-time, with Corey Hall crossing to get them on the board and the visitors mounting a sustained period of pressure. That spell failed to produce the second score Wakefield needed to change the game’s momentum, but it underlined their competitive threat late in the contest.

A decisive moment came with 15 minutes remaining when Wakefield spilled the ball while probing the Wigan line; Jai Field collected, stepped around Jack Sinfield and raced the length of the field to extend Wigan’s advantage. The try removed any realistic chance of a Wakefield comeback and followed the earlier attacks that had given Wigan control.

Wakefield added a consolation try when Ky Rodwell crossed with ten minutes left, and the report noted their place in the top six was "already assured in all probability." Despite the defeat, Wakefield produced enough in the second half to suggest they remain a postseason threat.

Wigan coach Matt Peet said: “The run is going to end at some point, but hopefully it’s not the next game. I’ve got a group I love working with. There’s a lot left in us but some of the good stuff comes through the imperfection. We can certainly be slicker but we were very hard to break down against a good team.” Wakefield coach Daryl Powell added: “It was a tough game we were in all the way through. We talked about their speed and what happens if you give them loose ball and we gave them two tries when we had the ball. Ultimately that was the difference, but we should be proud of our effort.”

Wigan sit atop the Super League table for now, with Leeds Rhinos able to displace them when they play in York on Sunday.
