Will Yashasvi Jaiswal play in India’s first ODI against West Indies on Sept 27?

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been named in India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies that begins on September 27, 2026, with the opening match scheduled in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

India’s selection for the series has been affected by the country also fielding a separate squad at the Asian Games in Japan, a situation that has left several senior players unavailable and opened opportunities for other players. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have returned to India’s ODI setup and, according to team announcements, have retired from the other two formats and now feature only in ODIs. The series offers a chance for new faces to stake a claim for regular places.

Jaiswal, 24, is included in the touring squad and has six ODIs to his name since making his debut in February 2025; in those matches he has scored 285 runs, including two centuries, but he is not yet a consistent starter in India’s ODI XI.

Competition for the opening slots is intense: Jaiswal is an opener across formats, while Rohit Sharma, who is now 39 years old, is expected to continue opening the innings alongside Shubman Gill, creating limited opportunities at the top of the order.

The projected top order for the series could see Rohit and Gill at the top with Virat Kohli occupying the No. 3 position; Shreyas Iyer has not been named in the squad because he is captaining India at the Asian Games, leaving Ruturaj Gaikwad as a potential option in the middle order.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir holds the selection decisions for the playing XI, and the squad balance leaves open the possibility that the staff could experiment and give Jaiswal at least one match in the three-game series.
