Marc-Vivien Foe was largely unknown before the 1994 World Cup but emerged as one of Cameroon's best performers on his debut tournament, and a standout game against Brazil led to a free transfer from Canon Yaounde to French side Lens. Foe spent four years at Lens, helped them win their first league title in the 1997-98 season and later played for West Ham United, Manchester City and Lyon, where he won the French League Cup and Lyon's first Ligue 1 title in 2002. He died in June 2003 after collapsing during a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia. Gilberto Silva's World Cup breakthrough came in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, when the 25-year-old from Atletico Mineiro played every minute of Brazil's campaign under Luiz Felipe Scolari and returned home as a World Cup winner. At 22, Javier Mascherano announced himself at the 2006 World Cup by helping Argentina reach the quarter-finals, and his performances for club and country attracted European interest. He initially expressed a desire to remain at Corinthians to help in their relegation battle but moved to West Ham United in the summer of 2006 alongside Carlos Tevez. James Rodriguez became one of the stars of the 2014 World Cup, scoring six goals for Colombia and winning the Golden Boot, and his volley against Uruguay was later voted as the best goal in the tournament by more than four million people on Fifa's website and won the Fifa Puskas Award. Real Madrid signed Rodriguez from Monaco for about 75m euros (£71m) after the tournament and he went on to win multiple trophies with Los Blancos, including two Champions Leagues.
Vozinha kept a clean sheet on his World Cup debut against eventual champions Spain as Cape Verde claimed their first World Cup point, and he helped his country reach the knockout stages, taking finalists Argentina to extra time in the last 32. His social media following rose from 50,000 Instagram followers to nearly 30 million and he was named in Fifa's team of the tournament; a newly discovered species of sea slug was also named after him. The 40-year-old's club career has included spells in Slovakia, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Portuguese second division side Chaves, and he has described himself as a "big club player" while calling joining Colo Colo his career "highlight".
