WPL 2027 auction: top five most expensive players
Sophie Molineux became the most expensive player at the WPL 2027 auction in Kochi on October 28, when UP Warriorz bought her for ₹1.10 crore. Her sale topped the list of transactions completed during the auction.
Five franchises took part as they prepared their squads for the fifth WPL season; the five teams collectively signed 25 players, leaving two slots vacant. The auction saw each franchise make targeted acquisitions to address squad needs ahead of the tournament.
Molineux previously played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and was part of their title-winning campaign in the 2024 season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru showed interest in her before UP Warriorz won the bidding contest. She is a left-arm spinner and a left-handed batter and is described as bringing international experience and leadership to the UP Warriorz squad.
India batter Kiran Navgire was the second-most expensive buy when Delhi Capitals acquired her for ₹75 lakh. Her base price had been ₹40 lakh and bidding increased after Mumbai Indians showed interest. Navgire is known for her power-hitting ability and will join Delhi Capitals for the upcoming season.
UP Warriorz also signed Australian all-rounder Grace Harris for ₹30 lakh; she was among several players purchased at that price during the auction. Harris can contribute with both bat and ball, providing the Warriorz with an additional all-round option.
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru signed Australian all-rounder Jess Jonassen for ₹40 lakh, making their first purchase some time after the auction began. Jonassen’s left-arm spin and batting ability add another experienced overseas option to RCB’s squad.
Gujarat Giants signed young Indian wicketkeeper-batter Gunalan Kamalini for ₹40 lakh, matching her base price. Kamalini will get the opportunity to showcase her skills alongside experienced players in the Gujarat Giants team and further improve her game.
With the auction concluded, the teams move into the final phase of preparation for the fifth WPL season. The tournament is scheduled to begin on January 14, 2027.
