WTC 2025-27: How remaining results shape qualification for all nine sides

India's 1-0 series victory over Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka — sealed by a win at Galle and a drawn second Test in Colombo — concluded the India tour of Sri Lanka and altered the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 qualification picture.
The WTC 2025-27 table is governed by points percentage (PCT) rather than aggregate points, and India finished the two-match Sri Lanka series with 16 points. Historically, teams have required a PCT above 60 to have a realistic prospect of reaching the WTC final; at present Australia leads on 80%, with South Africa and New Zealand also sitting well above 70%.
Australia carry an 80% PCT and have 12 Tests remaining in this cycle. Their schedule lists three Tests against South Africa, four versus New Zealand and five against India; the scenarios cited indicate six wins plus a draw would keep their PCT above 65%, while seven wins and a draw could push them into the 70s and strengthen their position for a WTC final place. Australia have appeared in the last two WTC finals, in 2023 and 2025, and won their maiden title in 2023.
South Africa retain a strong position with eight of their remaining Tests at home and home series against Australia, Bangladesh and England before an away trip to Sri Lanka. The calculations show six wins would move them to 66.67% and seven wins above 70%, offering them a route to defend the 2025 title.
New Zealand's remaining programme includes home series with India and Sri Lanka, and away assignments in Pakistan and Australia. If they win both home series and at least two away Tests they could surpass 65%; seven victories from their ten remaining matches would place them in the 70s and give them a shot at a second WTC final appearance since their 2021 final win.
India face two Tests in New Zealand and a five-match home series against Australia. A perfect run of seven wins would lift India to a 70.37% PCT; one loss would bring them close to 65%, while two defeats would drop them below 60% and make qualification heavily dependent on other results.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka occupy the middle permutations: Bangladesh have six Tests left — two away at South Africa and four at home against the West Indies and England — and would need at least four wins and two draws to reach 66.67%. Sri Lanka travel for two Tests each to Pakistan and New Zealand before hosting South Africa twice; winning all six would take them to 66.67% but would still require favourable outcomes elsewhere.
England, Pakistan and the West Indies are shown by the same computations as unlikely to reach the WTC final, with maximum attainable PCTs of up to 53.17, 56.41 and 32.14 respectively. India (2021 and 2023) and Australia (2023 and 2025) remain the only teams to have appeared in two of the three WTC finals held so far.
The permutations above make clear that the remaining scheduled Test matches for each side will determine which teams qualify for the WTC 2025-27 final; the outcomes of the listed series and the win-draw-loss combinations set out here will decide the final qualifiers.
