Microsoft's Xbox team denied on October 7, 2026 that Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) will be available to stream on Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch, rebutting a report by The Verge that said the game would be playable via cloud from day one. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball publicly rejected those claims and said recent coverage had misreported the situation.

The Verge report had asserted that Microsoft struck a deal with Rockstar Games to make GTA VI available to stream on Xbox Cloud Gaming from launch day and that players who purchased the Xbox Series X|S version through Microsoft’s cloud service could stream the game on PC. Following that coverage, Xbox moved to correct the record and characterise parts of the reporting as inaccurate. The company confirmed the game is due on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S but said it will not be streaming exclusively or to PC at launch.

The original report also outlined proposed limits on cloud playtime tied to Game Pass subscription levels and described a pay-as-you-go option for buying additional streaming hours. That coverage noted those allocated session lengths would be small relative to what some players expect from a large open-world title, which the report suggested "might have more than 80+ hours to complete." The report framed the pay-as-you-go option as Microsoft’s workaround to those time limits.

Xbox’s response, led by CSO Matthew Ball, emphasised that the company was supportive of GTA VI while disputing the specific streaming and PC availability claims in the earlier story. Xbox reiterated the November 19, 2026 launch date for the console editions and said the title would not be available for exclusive streaming on PC through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch. The statement sought to correct the assertion that day-one cloud streaming to PC was part of Microsoft's plan.

Rockstar Games has not announced an official PC release date for GTA VI, and the article noted expectations that a PC version might arrive in 2027. For launch day on November 19, 2026, only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners will have confirmed access to the game.
