Xbox may cancel Arkane Lyon’s Marvel’s Blade despite nearing completion, Jez Corden says

Microsoft’s Xbox could cancel Marvel’s Blade even though the project is reported to be near completion, Jez Corden said on his latest XB2 podcast on the subject.
Corden told listeners that Microsoft is evaluating whether the financial risks of releasing a licensed Marvel title justify the expected returns, comparing the potential outcome to what he called the "Wolverine Situation." He said the central concern is not the game’s development status but whether Microsoft can recoup the large production costs after accounting for Marvel’s licensing fees. The game is being developed by Arkane Lyon and was announced in 2023, but there has been no public release of further details since that announcement.
On the XB2 podcast, Corden framed the decision as one driven by cost and revenue projections, saying Xbox could decide to cancel the project "to avoid the 'Wolverine Situation,' where a costly Marvel game could fail to generate enough revenue to justify its development." He emphasized that those financial calculations include Marvel’s share of revenue, which affects the margin on licensed titles.
Corden also explained that licensed Marvel games carry tighter profit margins because a portion of sales revenue goes to Marvel, increasing the level of sales required for a project to be profitable. He noted that if projected sales fall short of expectations, Microsoft might conclude that further investment is not financially warranted.
He added that "no one outside of Microsoft currently has any idea of the actual quality of the game, what it will cost, what its sales goals will be or what it will be capable of internally," stressing that there is no independent public information about those internal metrics. As a result, Corden said it is impossible to verify the accuracy of cancellation reports without an official statement from Microsoft.
Corden further observed that any choice to close studios or lay off staff would be complicated by local labor rules, pointing out that such actions are more complex in France, where Arkane Lyon is based, due to labor laws. He described the decision as not straightforward for Microsoft given those legal and operational considerations.
Microsoft has not announced the cancellation of Marvel’s Blade; present reports rest on insider commentary. According to Corden, Microsoft’s concerns center on the game’s high development costs, Marvel licensing fees and whether projected sales would produce a sufficient return, and a formal comment from Microsoft would be required to confirm the project’s future.
