Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando clash in Colombo; disciplinary outcome to be decided

Yashasvi Jaiswal collided physically with Sri Lankan pace bowler Asitha Fernando in the first session of Day 1 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo, and match officials will determine whether any sanction follows under the ICC Code of Conduct.
The incident occurred early in the match as both teams sought to make an immediate impact; Jaiswal had been batting confidently prior to his dismissal, which gave extra weight to Fernando’s breakthrough. The exchange intensified post-dismissal and introduced an unusually heated episode into what was otherwise a standard opening session.
Fernando removed Jaiswal with a delivery that pitched round the wicket and came back sharply; the batter tried to punch toward the off side, struck a thick inside edge and the ball crashed into the stumps. After the wicket, Fernando delivered an animated send-off as Jaiswal left the crease.
Jaiswal initially walked away with his head down but then returned to confront Fernando, at which point the two men physically clashed when Jaiswal struck his helmet against the bowler and they locked horns. Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva intervened to separate them and prevent further escalation.
A ban is not automatic in such cases because the confrontation involved players from both sides, and any disciplinary outcome will depend on match officials’ interpretation under the relevant provisions of the ICC Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct distinguishes between different levels of misconduct, with sanctions and penalties varying over different offences. Though surely Jaisvi’s actions do not immediately attract any disciplinary misconduct, it remains to be seen if the player is handed any demerit points by the match referee.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s last Test century came back during the West Indies tour of India Second Test back in October 2025. No, Vinod Kambli holds the record to fastest 1000 Test runs for India with Yashasvi second on the list among Indian batters.
For now the clash stands as an on-field incident awaiting formal review; any disciplinary proceedings will be initiated by the match officials through the ICC’s established process, and India had entered the contest aiming to complete the series 2-0 to enhance their chances of finishing in a better position in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle.
