Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for a duck in India’s second innings of the First Test against Sri Lanka at Galle on Day 4 when Asitha Fernando removed the left-hander with the third ball of the innings.

Ever since his Test debut in 2023 against the West Indies, Jaiswal has emerged as a versatile opener in the longest format and has often been considered one of the future all-format stars of world cricket. His early Test career has been characterised by aggressive strokeplay and the ability to post massive double centuries, producing a string of high-scoring innings. Like many openers, he has struggled at times against the new ball, which brings early zip, carry and seam movement. Playing the 30th Test of his career, Jaiswal has opened for India in 56 innings.

Jaiswal’s first career duck came in the second Test against South Africa, when he was cleaned up by Kagiso Rabada in the first innings in Cape Town. His second duck arrived on his first tour to Australia, when Mitchell Starc dismissed him for a duck in the first innings at Perth. After that Perth match, Jaiswal responded with a massive 161 to help India recover in the First Test; Starc later trapped him in front during the first innings of the second Test.

In his Lord’s debut Jaiswal recorded another duck, dismissed by Jofra Archer as India suffered a heavy defeat at the venue. In the very next Test at Manchester he was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Chris Woakes.

During South Africa’s subsequent tour of India, Jaiswal was once again out for a duck when Marco Jansen dismissed him in the second innings of the Eden Gardens Test, an early wicket that contributed to India’s defeat in that First Test.

The dismissal at Galle brought Jaiswal’s total to seven ducks in Test cricket and seven centuries in the format; those seven ducks have been recorded against four different opposition teams.
