Yashasvi Jaiswal rebukes Harsha Bhogle over Colombo altercation with Asitha Fernando

Yashasvi Jaiswal fired back at veteran commentator Harsha Bhogle over Bhogle’s critique of his on-field exchange with Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando during Day 1 of the second Test in Colombo; Bhogle made the remarks in a Cricbuzz video posted on Instagram. Jaiswal replied directly to Bhogle’s assessment.

In the Cricbuzz clip Bhogle acknowledged that something appeared to have been said to Jaiswal as the Indian opener walked back after being dismissed and conceded Fernando’s words might have been provocative. He argued, however, that Jaiswal’s response — returning to the pitch rather than continuing to the pavilion — risked escalating the episode. Bhogle said the confrontation ended only after intervention by Sri Lankan players and described Jaiswal as a naturally combative personality who would benefit from keeping a check on his temperament.

Jaiswal rejected Bhogle’s framing of the incident and posted an angry reply to the video, writing: “If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment. If anyone crosses the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply.” He said outsiders who saw only the footage should not judge the exchange without knowing what was said on the field.

On the field Jaiswal was dismissed for 45 after hitting three consecutive boundaries in the same over to Asitha Fernando, who responded with an animated send-off. That animated celebration was followed by what the report described as an ugly tiff between the two players, and Sri Lankan teammates stepped in to prevent the situation from worsening.

Statistically, Jaiswal currently ranks sixth among highest run-getters for India in WTC history with 2544 runs. In the ongoing two-Test series between India and Sri Lanka he has accumulated a total of 77 runs across 3 innings.

Jaiswal’s reply to Bhogle’s remarks went viral, and the episode has continued to generate heat and discussion off the field.
