Zaheer Khan named Chennai Super Kings head coach for IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League in Chennai on September 21, 2026.

Stephen Fleming, who led CSK from 2009 to 2026, has been replaced after what the club described as three poor seasons in which the five-time champion failed to qualify for the playoffs; Fleming was removed from the role earlier this year.

The club’s announcement suggested Zaheer is on a one-year contract, and the release noted his previous involvement in coaching set-ups with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giant.

Rupa Gurunath, owner, CSK, said: “We are pleased to confirm Zaheer as the head coach. Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our set-up. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of the franchise.”

K.S. Viswanathan, Managing Director, CSK, said: “Zaheer is a world-class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains, and we look forward to having him in our family.”

Zaheer said: “It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special. I can’t wait to join the franchise with such a rich history”.

With a mega auction scheduled to take place before 2028, the club noted it remains to be seen whether the one-year appointment will be a short-term arrangement ahead of that event.
