Zeph Thomas: 39 moves across five countries and a first FA Cup for Dearne & District
Zeph Thomas, a 36-year-old Bradford-born winger who has made 39 moves in 18 years and played for 29 different clubs since being released by Rotherham United in 2008, will lead ninth-tier Dearne & District in their first-ever FA Cup match on Saturday at Runcorn Town in the extra preliminary round. Thomas, a former St Kitts & Nevis international, was appointed player-manager of the South Yorkshire village club in 2024.
Thomas began his career at Rotherham United when Mark Robins was youth team coach and was released in 2008 without making a senior appearance. Since then he has had spells across five countries, featuring for clubs including Garden City Broncbusters (United States), Montegnee (Belgium) and Thunder Bay Chill (Canada), as well as numerous teams in England and Scotland. His itinerary includes repeated returns to some clubs: Rossington Main (five spells), Mickleover Sports (four spells) and Frickley Athletic (three spells). The catalogue of previous sides also lists Cowdenbeath, Boston United, Harrogate Town, Scarborough Athletic, Stafford Rangers, Leek Town, Ilkeston Town, Matlock Town, Goole, Glossop North End, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Brighouse Town (two spells), Emley, Harrogate Railway Athletic, Sheffield, Shaw Lane, Belper Town, Parkgate, Campion, Eccleshill United, Selby Town and Ossett United.
Thomas led Dearne & District to the Northern Counties East League First Division title last season and the village club, based in Goldthorpe near Barnsley, will play one of 219 extra preliminary round ties scheduled to take place this weekend. "We've gone from being in the Doncaster Saturday League in 2021 to playing in the FA Cup," he said, adding: "It's massive for the area because they have never seen this team play in the competition." The club drew 453 for their home league game with Penistone Church on 28 July.
Reflecting on his nomadic career, Thomas said: "If I I didn't get the money I thought I deserved, I'd be off." He acknowledged mistakes from his early years: "I was a bit petulant and naive back then," and recalled: "I remember scoring in a reserve game and then the next day we had to come in for recovery runs. At the time, I didn't think I should have been doing any of that." On those early choices he added: "If my attitude had been better I would probably have been fine to be honest."
In 2013 Thomas suffered a groin injury that nearly ended his playing days; he worked in a call centre in Rotherham and considered joining the army before an opportunity at Thunder Bay Chill in Ontario revived his career. While at Stocksbridge Park Steels he faced Jamie Vardy when Vardy was with Halifax Town. Thomas also qualified to play for St Kitts and Nevis through his grandfather and is pictured with the national team in 2013.
His movements within non-league football have been concentrated in short spells: in 2013-14 he was on the books of Sheffield, Mickleover Sports, Scarborough Athletic, Matlock Town and Goole, while 2016-17 saw him return to Mickleover Sports before spells at Shaw Lane, Stafford Rangers and Frickley Athletic, eventually ending back at Mickleover. The longest continuous period at one club came during his second stint with Brighouse Town between 2020 and 2023.
Off the pitch Thomas lives a five-minute walk from Dearne & District's ground with his wife, Marie, and their children Jerome, 11, and Lucia, seven. He combines his part-time player-manager duties with being lead coach of Derby County Under-12s, who won the Orange Veins Madrid tournament in 2025, and remains registered to play for Dearne & District though he now prefers to coach from the dugout. "Sometimes I feel a bit of a hypocrite because I used to move clubs for extra money," he said. "Now I say to my players, 'keep on doing what you're doing because the money will come'."
Dearne & District travel to Runcorn Town on Saturday for their first FA Cup tie, one of 219 fixtures in the extra preliminary round, with Thomas overseeing the side as player-manager following his 2024 appointment and last season's league title.
