Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki scored an own goal that allowed Fulham to earn a 1-1 draw in a Premier League match at Villa’s home on October 31, 2026. Nicolas Jackson had put Villa ahead before Suzuki’s error from a Fulham corner denied Unai Emery’s side a fifth win in six league games.

Jamie Carragher’s recent remarks about Aston Villa provoked a strong response from the club’s hierarchy and supporters ahead of the match; Carragher had told Villa fans "to shut the fuck up", a comment he later admitted was "clumsy and wrong". Villa chair Nassef Sawiris issued a statement promising to pursue legal action and said: "As custodians of this great club, we cannot stand still while the F word is directed at Villa fans." The Holte End expressed its view within moments of the stadium applauding the last post in honour of Remembrance Day, and home supporters sang loudly for the manager.

Unai Emery’s record with the club was noted in the build-up: despite losing Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Emi Martínez after the Europa League triumph last summer, Villa had recovered form, winning eight of their previous 10 league games in October and November after earlier struggles, having won only two of their last 12 league games across August and September. The match represented an opportunity to move up to seventh in the Premier League before a trip to Barcelona on Tuesday and a home game against Manchester United the following Sunday.

The game’s first big moment came when a penalty was awarded after Sander Berge was belatedly adjudged to have handled Leon Goretzka’s header. John McGinn’s spot-kick struck the crossbar; it was McGinn’s first penalty for the club (excluding shootouts).

Villa took the lead in the 39th minute when Nicolas Jackson was released down the inside-left channel by a perfectly swerved through ball from Johan Manzambi. The £65m striker controlled the pass, evaded Timothy Castagne and David Affengruber and finished to register what the match report described as his eighth goal of the season and his fifth in the last five league games.

Fulham pushed for an equaliser in the second half, with Oscar Bobb forcing a fine fingertip save from Suzuki. Antonee Robinson delivered a left-wing cross that Suzuki and the stretching Gonzalo García both touched before the ball went out for a goal kick, and when Timothy Castagne nodded on an Alex Iwobi corner the ball saw further touches from García and Shea Charles before spooning up onto the roof of the net.

Midway through the second half Fulham were rewarded when Suzuki, having just saved a header from Iwobi, inexplicably dropped the ball from the corner under no pressure and it went just over the line, resulting in the own goal that secured Fulham a point.

The draw prevented Villa from moving up to seventh in the table ahead of their trip to Barcelona on Tuesday and their subsequent match against Manchester United next Sunday.
