Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector is expected to be decided soon by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, with a crucial meeting likely before his current extension expires in September. A top source told Sports Tak that senior BCCI officials are likely to meet Agarkar to discuss whether he will continue in the role.

Senior figures inside the BCCI and members of the Indian team have shown support for Agarkar, the source said, and the board is open to offering him an extension. Agarkar will also have to decide whether he wants to remain in the demanding position, which has come under scrutiny in recent weeks. No final decision has been made, though the BCCI is considering a further one-year extension.

Reports have suggested there are differences between sections of the BCCI and the selection committee over the handling of Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, a development the source said has added to the uncertainty around Agarkar’s position. For now, Agarkar remains chairman of India’s senior men’s selection committee while discussions continue.

Agarkar was appointed chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023, replacing Chetan Sharma, who stepped down earlier that year. His elevation followed the vacancy created by Sharma’s departure and has governed selection processes since mid-2023.

India’s record under Agarkar’s panel features several major tournament results: the team reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, where they lost to Australia; they won the 2024 T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa in the final; and they claimed the 2025 Champions Trophy, beating New Zealand in the final while completing the tournament unbeaten.

Those successes have been accompanied by setbacks, including a historic home Test series defeat to New Zealand and a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in Australia. Overall, India’s results during Agarkar’s tenure have mixed major ICC triumphs with difficult outcomes amid a period of transition and significant selection changes.

With India facing an important period across formats, the BCCI’s forthcoming meeting with its selection committee chairman is expected to determine whether Agarkar is granted the proposed extension; the board has not yet announced its decision.
