Ancy Sojan loses Asian Games long jump gold as Huang prevails; Sarvesh Kushare takes high jump silver

Ancy Sojan missed out on long jump gold and settled for silver, and Sarvesh Kushare claimed silver in the high jump at the Asian Games in Nagoya on September 27, 2026, at the Paloma Mizuho Athletics Stadium.

Heavy rain and cold conditions affected competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, and Ancy led the long jump for the first five rounds before being overtaken. She was briefly in a position to secure what the report described as India’s first athletics gold at these Games, and compatriot Shaili Singh occupied a provisional podium spot early in the event. The weather and long delays between attempts were cited as making it difficult for field athletes to stay warmed up.

In the long jump, Ancy opened with 6.49m and held the lead until late in the contest. China’s Huang Yingying matched Ancy earlier in the fifth round, after which Ancy improved to 6.53m in that same round. Huang saved her best for the final attempt, jumping 6.55m to move ahead, while Tan Mengyi produced a 6.46m final jump that pushed Shaili Singh, who managed 6.42m, out of the medals.

Sarvesh Kushare, who had been uncertain before the Asiad due to a niggle that kept him out of competition, produced a 2.25m clearance in his second attempt to finish second in the high jump. His silver at the Asian Games matched the colour of his Commonwealth Games result, and he finished behind Fu Chao-hsuan of Taiwan.

Tejaswin Shankar completed the decathlon with a victory in the 1,500m but accumulated 7,934 points, which earned him the bronze medal. He finished behind Yuma Maruyama, who scored 8,123 points, and Xinghua Chen, who had 8,012 points.

Several other Indian athletes reached finals or podiums: Parul Chaudhary set a personal best of 9:08.67 to take bronze in the 3,000m steeplechase; Harita Bhadra, in her maiden continental outing, won bronze in the 200m in 23.20s; Animesh Kujur was fifth in the 200m final in 20.80s. Thailand’s Boonson Puripol set a new Asian record of 19.88s in the 200m, adding to his 100m Games record. In the women’s marathon race walk, Manju Rani finished last in 3:40:17, while Priyanka was disqualified after receiving four warnings within the first nine km.

Ancy Sojan’s silver was her second successive Asian Games silver, and Tejaswin Shankar will return home with a medal for the second straight Asiad.
