Australia strengthen grip after bowling South Africa out for 251 at Kingsmead

Australia strengthened their position in the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban on Day 3 after bowling the hosts out for 251 and reaching 17 without loss in their second innings. The visitors carried an overall lead of 139 into stumps with two days remaining in the contest.
South Africa produced several starts that failed to develop into a big score: seven batters passed 25, with David Bedingham top-scoring on 49. Bedingham and Aiden Markram shared an 84-run partnership for the second wicket. Markram made 37 before edging Mitchell Starc to Matt Renshaw at first slip, and Bedingham was dismissed when he edged a back-foot drive to Steve Smith; that catch took Smith's Test tally to 222, moving him past England's Joe Root, who had 220 catches.
Smith took two further catches in the innings, one a sharp one-handed effort to remove Kyle Verreynne for 13. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma managed only three runs before he fell to a reverse sweep against Nathan Lyon. Wiaan Mulder made 30 and Tristan Stubbs scored 32, but neither converted their start into a substantial innings.
Marco Jansen provided a late burst with 26 off 20 balls before Australia continued to chip away at the lower order. Pat Cummins led the visitors' attack with three wickets, while Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon claimed two apiece. The Australian bowlers were able to capitalise on loose shots at crucial moments to remove set batsmen.
The lower order offered resistance as Harmer and Maharaj combined for a 52-run partnership for the ninth wicket. The final two wickets added 87 runs, giving the hosts a late boost after a difficult day. That late contribution reduced the scale of the collapse late in the innings.
Australia began their second innings before the close, reaching 17 without loss. Nic Maddinson struck a boundary to get off the mark and finished unbeaten on 17. His opening partner remained not out at the other end.
Play resumes on Day 4, with Australia aiming to extend their lead quickly and South Africa needing early wickets to prevent Australia from setting a daunting target.
