R. Smaran scored 126 on his senior Karnataka captaincy debut at the ACA International Stadium in Mulapadu on Sunday to steady his side during their 2026-27 Ranji Trophy opener against Andhra, rescuing Karnataka from 22 for four early in the innings.

The Mulapadu ground, described in the report as picturesque, offered punishing heat and still late-summer air as Smaran batted for nearly five-and-a-half hours to anchor the visitors’ recovery; his 126 (218b, 11x4, 1x6) was his eighth First Class century. Early wickets saw the likes of K.L. Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair fall cheaply, which the report characterises as the result of some good bowling and not-so-good batting, leaving Karnataka in a precarious position before Smaran’s innings.

Smaran combined with wicket-keeper batter K.L. Shrijith to forge a match-defining fifth-wicket stand of 111; Shrijith made 58 (82b, 3x4, 3x6) and played several reverse-sweeps, including an acrobatic six over mid-wicket off left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar. After Shrijith’s dismissal the visitors again subsided to 174 for seven, but Smaran resumed control by farming the strike and directing the tail.

The captain added 59 with debutant Madhav Bajaj, who scored 33 (53b, 2x4, 1x6), and a further 41 with Shikhar Shetty, who made 13 (38b, 2x4). Smaran reached his hundred with a punched four off left-arm spinner Lalith Mohan — the same shot with which he began his knock — and was later castled by Lalith while attempting a pull, reacting by throwing his bat into the air in disappointment.

Selection notes in the report state that leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal missed out because of dehydration and that left-arm tweaker Madhav was one of three debutants alongside Manvanth Kumar and Ritesh Bhatkal; Madhav’s bowling then forced T. Vijay to edge to K.L. Rahul at slip. Andhra’s innings at stumps read 16 for two in five overs with Hemanth Reddy c Smaran b Shikhar 1, Abhishek Reddy 10, T. Vijay c Rahul b Madhav 4 and Shaik Rasheed 1, and Karnataka’s bowling figures listed as Abhilash 1-0-5-0, Shikhar 2-0-8-1 and Madhav 2-0-3-1.
