Blizzard announces Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, cites scope of Diablo story; game due Spring 2029

At BlizzCon 2026 Blizzard announced Diablo 5 rather than a paid expansion for Diablo 4, and said the new title is expected to launch in Spring 2029; Executive Producer Matt Zitterman outlined the studio’s reasons for the decision.
Zitterman said the development team gathered feedback from Diablo 4 players and concluded the series required substantial changes that could not be delivered through an expansion or DLC. He explained Blizzard wanted to build a story around Diablo that could rival recent antagonists Lilith and Mephisto, and the studio decided the Lord of Terror “deserves his own campaign rather than just an expansion.” Zitterman added the developer pledges to offer a narrative that’s as "compelling" as Diablo 4’s Lilith storyline and Mephisto’s character for the series.
Blizzard described Diablo 5’s setting as a world in which Diablo has already won and Sanctuary lies in ruins. The publisher said survivors will be gathered in a mobile base — a moving caravan — that will travel the destroyed world. The company stated players will journey across that ruined landscape while fighting to survive and ultimately challenge the Lord of Terror.
The studio confirmed several gameplay elements for the sequel, beginning with the return of procedurally generated dungeons. Blizzard also announced the comeback of classic classes including the Demon Hunter and the Monk. In addition, the game will introduce an all-new Plague Knight class.
Blizzard made clear Diablo 4 will continue to receive support despite the new project. The team confirmed Diablo 4 will keep getting seasonal content and gameplay updates but that it will not receive any paid expansions. The company said future seasons may help bridge the narrative gap between Diablo 4 and Diablo 5.
Blizzard released a first teaser for "DIABLO 5" stating "Releasing in 2029." Diablo 5 is scheduled to launch in Spring 2029.
