Brighton beat Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium in a Premier League rematch on Saturday afternoon, three days after losing to City on penalties in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The result was secured by a standout performance from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, whose saves preserved Brighton's lead and earned praise from head coach Fabian Hurzeler.

Brighton have kept five clean sheets in their last six Premier League games and lead the division for goalscoring with 24 in nine matches this season. The club have also kept the most clean sheets (six) and have conceded seven goals; Arsenal have conceded five and have played one game fewer, travelling to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday. Fabian Hurzeler was appointed Brighton manager before the 2024-25 season.

Most Brighton players went straight to goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen after the final whistle, reflecting his central role in the win; he made seven saves and produced a sprawling save down to his right to deny a fierce Matheus Nunes effort in the second half. Hurzeler commended the goalkeeper's performance for "spreading belief" and said: "It's important to have this mindset and to spread it around the environment we work in, and belief is key to winning these types of games. Coming here to City, against one of the best teams in the league, is always special. You have to be brilliant at the basics and everyone was contributing. From Tuesday, when we travelled [to Manchester], we wanted to have a good four days, enjoy it and finish strong. Everyone can enjoy this win today." Brighton became the first visiting side to keep a Premier League clean sheet at the Etihad since Tottenham in August 2025.

Manchester City registered an expected goals total of 1.92 compared with Brighton's 1.00 and had 21 shots on target without scoring, their highest number without doing so in the Premier League since November 2024 when they managed 24 and drew a blank. The hosts created clear opportunities from attempts by Iliman Ndiaye, Abdukodir Khusanov and Matheus Nunes but were unable to convert.

Brighton's defensive solidity has been bolstered by the signing of Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur; the 19-year-old joined for a club record fee in July, has started all nine Premier League matches and formed a partnership with Lewis Dunk while building an understanding with Verbruggen. Vuskovic, Dunk and Verbruggen all played the full 90 minutes at the Etihad.

Verbruggen reflected on the collective effort after the match, saying: "It was a good game from all of us. I'm happy to help the team and make some important saves, but I wasn't the only one. I think there were four or five shots blocked in an amazing way as well. It was a joint effort from everyone. We celebrate and go again." Asked by Sky Sports whether his side could challenge for the title, he added: "We are on game nine, so not really. We'll take it game by game and see what happens because we have loads of games. We are just focusing every day on what's ahead of us and the job we have. We will continue to do that and see where it leaves us at the end of the season. We are happy with the way we are playing – not just the results but the way we are playing, too. We have to continue to develop that style and ruthlessness and we can do great things."

Brighton's win leaves them sitting third in the Premier League, two points behind Arsenal and Manchester City, and follows earlier notable results this season including a 3-0 victory against Arsenal in September; the club's position in the table and recent performances have intensified discussion about their prospects this campaign.
