Cagliari forward Yael Trepy, 20, was airlifted to hospital on Sunday afternoon after losing consciousness in a swimming pool at a villa in Sardinia and remains under "pharmacological sedation" and on a ventilator.

Cagliari shared a statement on Tuesday from the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari that said Trepy was "fever free" and that his "respiratory function" has improved compared to the severe condition when he was admitted; "The prognosis remains guarded," the statement said.

BBC Sport has been told Trepy was in the pool with friends and is thought to have run into difficulty after moving into an area where he could not touch the bottom; he was pulled from the water and then airlifted to hospital.

The club confirmed the incident came after a weekend in which Cagliari had been given time off following a Coppa Italia win; the team beat Arezzo 1-0 on Friday and Trepy played 54 minutes in that match.

Trepy scored once in eight Serie A appearances last season after progressing from Cagliari's youth ranks; he joined the club's academy in 2022, having begun his youth career with Parisian side US Creteil-Lusitanos.

He remains in hospital under "pharmacological sedation" and on a ventilator. Should he continue to improve, there will be a "gradual reduction in sedation."
