Chelsea agree £47.1m deal to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara
Chelsea have agreed a £47.1m deal to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, the club announced on 1 September 2026 during the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old is set to undergo a medical once Chelsea complete the sale of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a deal that matched the £125m British transfer record.
Chelsea had initially resisted Monaco’s asking price for Camara but relaxed those demands after striker Folarin Balogun’s move to Everton from the French club came into renewed doubt. The club had been expected to stick with its existing midfield options despite sanctioning Fernandez’s exit, but instead took the chance to secure one of their primary targets at a reduced fee. Chelsea held talks with Roma’s Manu Kone and another unnamed Premier League option before advancing the Camara agreement.
The signing is not being presented as a like-for-like replacement for Fernandez, with the club describing Camara as offering a different midfield profile. Chelsea view the acquisition as a move to help preserve the strength of new manager Xabi Alonso’s squad following Fernandez’s transfer to Manchester City.
One of Chelsea’s stated aims this summer was to leave the transfer window with an upgraded squad despite selling Fernandez to a direct rival. To that end, the club have completed several incoming deals, including Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a club-record £117m deal, centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa.
Chelsea’s recruitment list also includes strikers Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck, winger Geovany Quenda, midfielders Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco, and full-backs Marco Palestra and Pep Chavarria. The club believe these additions collectively address squad needs identified by the new coaching staff.
On the pitch, Alonso’s side have won all three of their matches this season, recording victories over Fulham and Brighton in the Premier League and progressing to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a win against Luton Town.
Camara’s transfer will be finalised once Chelsea complete the Fernandez sale to Manchester City, after which the midfielder is scheduled to undergo a medical examination.
