Chelsea are closing in on an agreement with Rayo Vallecano to sign left-back Pep Chavarria, finalising a move reported on 5 August 2026 worth about £16.3m plus further add-ons and with the player having already agreed personal terms. Club sources say all parties are increasingly confident of completing the transfer from Rayo to Chelsea.

Chavarria has spent four years at Rayo, having moved from Real Zaragoza in 2022, and is 28 years old. Chelsea lodged an initial £15m offer at the end of June which Rayo rejected, and talks have continued since then. Negotiations became protracted amid a belief at Chelsea that Rayo raised their valuation during the process, at one point asking for the full £42.8m release clause. The move has been pursued as a priority by new manager Xabi Alonso.

The player made it clear to Rayo that he wanted a switch to Stamford Bridge. Rayo Vallecano lost to Crystal Palace in the Conference League final in May, a result noted during the club’s recent season recap. Chavarria is identified specifically as a left-back target in Chelsea’s recruitment plans.

Alonso targeted Chavarria after facing him while in charge of Real Madrid last season, and the signing would pair with new right-back Marco Palestra to support Alonso’s preferred wing-back system. Palestra joined Chelsea in July from Atalanta for £47m. The report links Chavarria’s recruitment to Alonso’s tactical blueprint, citing the manager’s earlier success with a wing-back set-up at Bayer Leverkusen that won the Bundesliga in 2024.

Chavarria’s addition would bolster the left-back position following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid in June for £51.8m. Chelsea have also added experienced players this summer, signing striker Danny Welbeck, 35, from Brighton and Jordan Henderson, 36, after he cancelled his contract with Brentford. The club has made further moves including a club-record £117m forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52m, with Valentin Barco expected to join from partner club Strasbourg imminently.

Chelsea are expected to focus on player sales in the coming weeks and have reached an agreement to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Italian club Como 1907 for about £31m. Completion of Chavarria’s transfer would be the latest incoming deal aligned with that wider squad restructuring.
