Chelsea face urgent squad clearout with 41 senior players and 25 days of the transfer window left

Chelsea have 41 senior players on their books and must reduce that number with 25 days remaining in the transfer window, a situation laid bare after their 1-0 defeat by Juventus in Hong Kong on Wednesday as the club continues its Asian tour.

Manager Xabi Alonso, overseeing a squad that contains recent signings and numerous established professionals, is pressing for a significant cut because Chelsea will not play in European competition this season and the club would need to offload around 16 players to reach a manageable 25 senior players by the start of September. FIFA has outlawed the previous practice of keeping stranded players in a 'bomb squad', increasing the urgency of moving players on, and UEFA has acknowledged Chelsea's efforts to improve their finances while the club remains bound by a UEFA settlement agreement for three more seasons. The Blues have supplemented Alonso's group with signings including Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson and Maxence Lacroix, with Pep Chavarria close to joining from Rayo Vallecano.

The scale of the issue was underlined in Hong Kong, where Chelsea named 21 substitutes for the 1-0 loss to Juventus; only five of those were academy players. Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill missed that midweek friendly because of knocks sustained in a previous match, and Emmanuel Emegha is continuing rehabilitation from a hamstring injury at the training ground. Chelsea have been carrying a large squad through the Asian tour by design and are scheduled to face AC Milan in Indonesia on Saturday and Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta'zim on Sunday, with the club likely to use different starting XIs for those fixtures.

Five players are not training with the first team and are available for permanent moves or loans: Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Caleb Wiley. Jamie Gittens, Pedro Neto and new arrival Geovany Quenda add wide options, Cole Palmer and Rogers provide playmaking in number 10 roles, and Chelsea would like three strikers—Joao Pedro and Danny Welbeck are present with Emmanuel Emegha likely to be retained while Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap, who together cost a combined £62m, are among those with uncertain futures.
