Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters FC will meet in Chennai on October 31 in an Indian Super League 2026-27 fixture; across all competitions the pair have played 25 times with 8 wins apiece and 9 draws.

The fixture, commonly called the Southern Derby, is defined by its supporters and atmosphere: Kerala Blasters’ Manjappada convert the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi into a wall of yellow while Chennaiyin’s Supermachans supply a loud, Marina-breeze following. Kerala Blasters are described in this rivalry as a team that has long played to a stadium rather than a table, and Chennaiyin as a club that has repeatedly rebuilt while retaining a title-winning edge.

Draws are frequent in the series: nine of the 25 meetings are draws, which is 36 percent of the head-to-head. The goals tally reads Kerala Blasters 37, Chennaiyin 31 — 68 goals in total, an average approaching three per match.

One of the earliest dramatic ties between the sides came in the 2014 ISL semifinal on December 16, 2014, when Kerala Blasters progressed 4–3 on aggregate to the inaugural ISL final after a 3-0 first-leg win in Kochi. Chennaiyin levelled the tie to 3-3 on aggregate in the return, forcing extra time, and Stephen Pearson scored in the final minutes to take Kerala Blasters to the finals.

Chennaiyin’s 6-3 victory over Kerala Blasters in February 2020 stands out for its scoring swing: Chennaiyin led 3-0 within a minute of half-time after goalkeeper errors were punished, then Bartholomew Ogbeche produced a second-half hat-trick (48′, 65′, 76′) to pull Kerala back to 4-3 before Lallianzuala Chhangte and Nerijus Valskis added late goals to finish the game 6-3. At the time it equalled the highest-scoring match in ISL history and occurred in Kochi.

A 3-3 draw in Kochi in November 2023 exemplified the fixture’s open nature, with neither side able to claim they deserved more. Kerala Blasters’ most dominant single-match margins came in two 3-0 wins, in February 2022 and November 2024; the February 2022 result was part of a season in which they went on to finish runners-up. In both 3-0 wins, Kerala’s wide play and quick transitions are described as having stretched Chennaiyin’s back line until it conceded.

When the teams walk out in Chennai on October 31, the ledger will be level and one result will break it. That is reason enough to watch.
