Jacy Maranhão, a 29-year-old defender for Coritiba, fell down a hole while celebrating a goal that was later ruled out by the video assistant referee in a Brazilian Série A encounter with Chapecoense at the Estádio Couto Pereira on 10 August 2026. The celebration ended with Maranhão being forced off and the disallowed strike ultimately proving pointless as Coritiba still went on to win 2-1.

Maranhão had sprinted toward the home supporters after what appeared to be his side’s 41st-minute second goal, carrying the ball tucked under his jumper to mark imminent fatherhood. He misjudged a hurdle over advertising hoardings, plunged down the tunnel that leads to the away dressing room and was unable to continue. Coritiba believed the strike would give them a 2-0 lead before the intervention of the video assistant referee.

The match officials, after consulting the video assistant referee, ruled the goal out and the scoreline remained unchanged until Coritiba secured a 2-1 victory. The disallowed goal left Maranhão’s viral celebration without effect on the result, even though the team recorded the win.

Maranhão escaped without serious injury but was substituted two minutes after half-time following the fall. He sat out the second half on the bench with ice on his ankle and commented afterwards: “I twisted my foot there. It’s a bit sore, but I’m fine.”

Reflecting on the occasion, Maranhão added: “Centre-backs hardly ever score goals. I just got carried away.” The goal would have been only his tenth career strike; he had scored only nine previous career goals before the match.

This was not the first time a player had fallen down the same hole at the Estádio Couto Pereira; in 2014 Diederrick Joel Tagueu, a Coritiba striker, was injured after falling down the hole while celebrating a goal, and that earlier goal was not disallowed.
