County celebrations and England turmoil consign the Hundred to a secondary role in 2026 summer
At Warwickshire on Sunday, celebrations for the county’s ninth County Championship title and broader turmoil within England’s men’s setups combined to relegate the Hundred to a supporting role in the 2026 English summer, six weeks after the Hundred finals at Lord’s. Manchester Super Giants’ men’s Hundred triumph at Old Trafford did not alter that dynamic.
After large private investment into English cricket and hopes the Hundred’s rebirth under private ownership would dominate the season, the calendar lacked an Ashes series or a major Test showdown with India and instead featured smaller touring programmes. The Women’s T20 World Cup was staged on home soil while the men’s football World Cup drew the biggest attention; expectations around Nat Sciver-Brunt’s England side and Australia were modestly aligned before the summer began.
At Warwickshire the County Championship celebrations filled the outfield with supporters and players, and there was little discussion of Birmingham Phoenix’s failings despite the franchise being 50.4% Warwickshire-owned and performing poorly in both the men’s and women’s Hundred. The county atmosphere contrasted with franchise narratives about player pay and family-friendly matchdays.
In Manchester, where Manchester Super Giants won the men’s Hundred, Lancashire’s response was markedly different: the county, a 30% shareholder in the Super Giants, finished second bottom in Division Two with two wins all season and cancelled its end-of-season awards do amid supporter unrest. Mark Chilton has been sacked as director of cricket performance, the incoming chief executive Richard Kenyon will lead a “clear and objective look at our performance operation”, and Daniel Gidney is leaving his role as chief executive.
The Hundred has nonetheless attracted new audiences and blurred the lines between host counties and their franchise teams, but the most stirring moments and the sharpest recriminations of the summer came from the traditional, year-round county structures. That split in reactions underlines the different priorities within the domestic game.
England’s men’s teams created the other major distraction, with a late-night drinking incident, Ben Stokes quitting as Test captain and Brendon McCullum demoted to white-ball head coach after a 2-1 Test defeat against New Zealand. Looking ahead, the schedule includes white-ball tours of Pakistan and Australia, Test series in South Africa and Bangladesh, and the 150th Anniversary Test in Melbourne, and the piece reports there is a sense of quiet optimism about the winter.
England’s limited-overs programmes showed strong form: the Twenty20 team have won 23 of their past 26 games and the 50-over side has won all six bilateral series this year. Jonathan Trott has been appointed head coach of the Lions, Stephen Fleming will begin as England’s new Test head coach and has instructed that more credence be given to the World Test Championship.
With the Ashes scheduled for 2027, the domestic and international calendar suggests the Hundred is likely to remain off the summer’s top billing for the foreseeable future.
