Crystal Palace lose appeal over Jean-Philippe Mateta red card

Crystal Palace have lost their appeal against Jean-Philippe Mateta's red card in the defeat by Tottenham on Saturday. The club’s challenge to the dismissal was rejected, meaning the striker will miss subsequent matches as a result.
Palace sit 18th in the Premier League with seven points from nine matches and have lost their last three league games, during which they have conceded nine goals and scored none. The Liverpool match on Sunday is described in the club report as potentially significant for manager Pierre Sage's long-term future following what the article calls a disappointing start to his reign.
Referee Michael Oliver issued a straight red to Mateta for a late challenge on Micky van de Ven when the game was still 0-0, after 13 minutes. Oliver initially showed yellow before the decision was changed to red following a review by the video assistant referee.
The France forward caught Spurs defender Van de Ven on top of the ankle during the incident. As a consequence of the upheld red card Mateta will miss Sunday's fixture at Liverpool, the trip to Coventry on 21 November and a home game against Hull on 29 November.
It is reported that Palace view the impact as accidental; the 29-year-old forward believed his eyes were on the ball and that he did not see the Dutch centre-back. The club presented that account during the appeal process, which was ultimately unsuccessful.
Mateta will remain available for Palace's Europa League home match against Hoffenheim on Thursday and for the visit of Real Sociedad on 26 November.
