David Silva, 40, has come out of retirement to sign for Hong Kong club Supreme Sha Tin, the move announced on October 7, 2026. He had retired from the game three years earlier after suffering a major knee injury while playing for Real Sociedad.

Silva won the World Cup and two European Championships for Spain during his international career. His ten-year spell with Manchester City produced 13 trophies. Those triumphs are now under examination after the team was found guilty of violating Premier League financial regulations – a decision that they have challenged.

Supreme Sha Tin were recently promoted to Hong Kong’s top flight. The club appointed English manager Tom Ballantyne as their new manager earlier this week. The signing was confirmed by the club on social media.

Sha Tin have pulled off what the report described as an incredible deal to lure Silva to Asia. The player has signed a ‘short-term deal’ with the club. The club said the signing will involve Silva joining the squad and working toward match fitness before a debut.

Sha Tin declared the player’s arrival with an Instagram post: “Yo! Absolute madness! We are officially announcing that the legendary Spanish No. 21 midfielder, David Silva, has officially joined Supreme Sha Tin!” The club added: “David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut. Stay tuned!” A post shared by 至尊沙田足球會 Supreme Shatin Football Club (@supremeshatinfc)

In a video message to the Sha Tin’s fans, Silva said: “Hello everyone, I’m David Silva. I am very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin for this experience; I’m really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to enjoy the culture, the people, and the food in Sha Tin – and the football in Hong Kong, of course. I can’t wait to go, so I look forward to seeing you all soon. Best regards.” The club shared the message on its Instagram account.

Silva may make his debut as soon as October 18 after signing the short-term deal, according to the club’s announcement.
