Portugal coach Jorge Jesus on Tuesday evening responded outside his home to Cristiano Ronaldo’s written statement about the forward’s withdrawal from the national team camp during the UEFA Nations League, saying he had read the statement, would discuss it with the federation and that he had “nothing more to say”.

The exchange follows a breakdown in communication between Jesus and Ronaldo that led to the striker leaving the Portugal camp prematurely. Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Al Nassr, was left on the bench in Portugal’s match against Norway despite warming up and being expected to be substituted, a decision Jesus described as strategic.

Jesus initially told media outside his home late Tuesday evening that he had “not read” Cristiano Ronaldo’s letter. Later on Tuesday he said: “I read the statement and now, like I do every day, I’m going to the Federation headquarters to work, to think about the Portuguese national team. I have nothing more to say”.

Ronaldo set out his reasons for exiting the camp in a public statement, writing: “Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from half-time onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn’t called on. The manager had broken his word to me. I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for any further broken promises.”

The decision not to bring Ronaldo on against Norway and the subsequent comments have intensified tensions between the player and the coach, who had previously worked together at Al Nassr. Jesus has said the choice was tactical, but the episode nonetheless produced the player’s exit from the national setup during the Nations League window.

Ronaldo’s statement also addressed his international availability, with the report saying his words have eased immediate concerns about his Portugal future and confirmed his determination to continue defending the national team. The coverage noted he said he will be available if called up again and that it is unlikely he will leave the team.

Jesus has indicated he will take the matter to the federation when he visits its headquarters to work on and consider the Portuguese national team; Ronaldo has stated he remains available for selection if recalled, and the standoff will now be handled through those federation channels.
