Football Manager 27: Sports Interactive details match-engine upgrades, tactical tweaks and gameplay changes

Sports Interactive and SEGA on October 6, 2026 released a deep-dive video outlining a range of match-engine, tactical and gameplay upgrades coming to Football Manager 27. The studio said the changes target player movement, AI decision-making and in-match tactical control.
The developers said the movement system has been overhauled so players accelerate, decelerate, turn and change direction more naturally, with real match footage and sports scientists used in development. Fitness will carry greater weight: players with high stamina can make repeated sprints more frequently, while tired players will need longer recovery before another explosive run. The update also introduces new attacking dribbling animations and skills, and defensive reactions have been improved for one-on-one situations.
Attacking play around the penalty area has been reworked with smarter off-the-ball runs designed to exploit defensive blind spots and reduce teammates crowding the same space. Managers will be able to assign new attacking instructions that determine how a player attacks or approaches the penalty area, the video explained.
On the ball, attacking players gain specific new moves, listed by the developers as heel chop and elastico, while defenders will react more effectively to pacey attackers. The studio highlighted better positioning for defenders in one-on-one duels as part of the defensive enhancements.
A new Tactical Tweaks system permits in-match adjustments from the touchline without opening the full tactics screen, intended to speed up responses to game situations. The touchline interaction suite has been expanded and Team talks/shouts now factor in player personality and mentality, meaning players may react differently to the same instruction.
Outside the live match action, Football Manager 27 adds a feature that inserts match highlights between chunks and expands the Data Hub with additional stats, widgets and an adaptable interface. The developers said the game will include improved heatmaps and action zones, expanded Data Hub statistics, customizable data tiles and an adaptive interface to help managers analyse matches.
