Gill double century and Rohit century power India to 406-2 chase, seal series 2-0 in Guwahati

India chased down West Indies' 405/7 by reaching 406/2 in 41.4 overs to win by eight wickets in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30. The victory completed a successful run chase and decided the bilateral series in India's favour.

The target India chased was a record ODI pursuit and came after West Indies posted a 400-plus total; there had been no instance since 2006 of a team winning after conceding a 400-plus total. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma were the principal scorers for India in the chase.

West Indies were driven to 405/7 by three big contributions: John Campbell made 101 off 68 balls with nine fours and five sixes, Shai Hope scored 104 off 94 deliveries with eight fours and three sixes, and Amir Jangoo finished with 114 off 77 balls including 13 fours and three sixes. Those three innings combined to propel West Indies to their highest-ever ODI total.

India’s reply was anchored by the opening pair, with Shubman Gill, the ODI captain, recording his second double hundred in the format and Rohit Sharma adding a century. The two batsmen accounted for the bulk of the runs as India completed the chase inside 42 overs.

Kuldeep Yadav was the best performer among the Indian bowlers, finishing with figures of 2 for 65. The match also prompted questions about how Indian bowlers adapt to a flat batting surface such as the one at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

The eight-wicket win in Guwahati secured the series for India, with the visitors unable to recover from their big total despite their highest-ever ODI team score.
