Shubman Gill scores fastest men's ODI double century in Guwahati, becomes second player with multiple 200s
Shubman Gill struck the fastest double century in men's One-Day International cricket in Guwahati on Wednesday, reaching 200 in 117 balls in the second ODI against West Indies and becoming only the second batter, after Rohit Sharma, to record more than one double hundred in the format.
The India captain’s 117-ball double came after his first ODI double hundred, scored against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023, and it took the record away from India team-mate Ishan Kishan, who had reached a double hundred in 126 balls against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022. Rohit Sharma remains the only batter to have three ODI double hundreds.
Gill brought up his 11th ODI century from 62 balls, the fastest by an Indian captain, breaking Rohit’s 63-ball mark set against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup, and that century formed part of his third consecutive hundred in the 50-over format. The hundred also took Gill to 11 ODI centuries in 68 innings, making him the third-fastest to that tally behind Hashim Amla (64 innings) and Quinton de Kock (65 innings).
The innings began cautiously—14 runs from his first 11 balls—before the tempo accelerated; Gill reached his fifty in 37 balls and then scored 56 runs from the next 29 deliveries. Keemo Paul, Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph were among the bowlers he targeted as he repeatedly found the boundary.
Gill completed the double with a single off Vitel Lawes, working the ball towards long-on and running for the decisive run; halfway through that run he jumped and fist-pumped, then removed his helmet, placed it on the handle of his bat and raised it towards teammates and the crowd, a celebration with echoes of Chris Gayle’s familiar gesture. Inside the Indian dressing room, players applauded and Ruturaj Gaikwad embraced Gill.
His double century was also notable for occurring in a chase, making him only the second batter to score an ODI double hundred while batting in pursuit; Glenn Maxwell was the first when he made an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup in Mumbai. Gill’s knock was anchored by a 255-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma, India’s second-highest opening stand in men’s ODIs.
Rohit was dismissed for 101 from 75 balls, an innings of 10 fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 134.67, and only Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly have recorded a larger opening partnership for India—258 against Kenya in Paarl in 2001. Together as an opening pair, Rohit and Gill have accumulated 3,058 runs in 47 innings at an average of 66.47, with nine century stands and 16 partnerships of 50 or more.
With India deep into the chase, Gill smiled, asked for the heavy roller and continued to attack as he advanced towards the target. When the single off Lawes took him to 200, the helmet raised above his bat became the defining image of an innings in which Gill combined control with extraordinary aggression.
