Hain century puts Warwickshire close to County Championship

Sam Hain scored 142 for Warwickshire against Leicestershire at Edgbaston on day two of the Rothesay County Championship Division One, helping the Bears to 372 and a first-innings lead of 247; Leicestershire were 55-3 in their second innings. The result leaves Warwickshire on the brink of the title after a strong batting display on a seamer-friendly pitch.

Hain’s innings was part of a season in which he has scored 1,048 County Championship runs, and his 142 from 301 balls was his 21st first-class century; he has reached 1,000 first-class runs for the season for only the second time. Ed Barnard provided significant support with 88, and the pair combined for a fifth-wicket stand of 165 in 50 overs, while the Foxes entered the match with relegation concerns.

Warwickshire resumed on 130-4, already five runs ahead, and added 51 without loss in a morning session that was curtailed by bad light. Those runs extended Warwickshire’s edge and set the platform for a large first-innings total.

Barnard was dismissed for 88 after edging a wide delivery from Ben Green, falling 12 short of a century, and Chris Woakes then chipped his second ball to mid-on. Kai Smith and Manny Suthar contributed useful cameos before both were dismissed by the persistent Hull.

Hain’s century was acknowledged by the sizeable crowd before he continued to 142; last-pair resistance saw Hain and Olly Hannon-Dalby add a further 35. Ethan Bamber later added runs for the Bears but was bowled by a fine delivery from A Patel.

Leicestershire, bowled out for 125 in their first innings, began their second innings with Sol Budinger hitting 43 not out off 36 balls. Bamber then struck twice in three balls, trapping Sheridon Gumbs and removing Rishi Patel’s off-stump two balls later to take his season tally to 66, and after a bad-light interruption Woakes had Steve Eskinazi lbw.

A draw would now be sufficient for Warwickshire to secure the County Championship title; Leicestershire (3 pts) trail Warwickshire (6 pts) by 192 runs in the match. The Foxes’ relegation status has been affected by the result, subject to a points appeal, and home supporters who have attended in large numbers over the first two days will arrive for day three expecting a fourth day may not be required.
