Hoffenheim v Lyon: Europa League preview, injury updates and lineups

TSG Hoffenheim will host Olympique Lyonnais at PreZero Arena on October 22 in their third league phase outing of the UEFA Europa League 2026-27. Hoffenheim come into the match having ended a poor run with a 2-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Lyon travel on the back of consecutive wins in the Europa League.

Hoffenheim have lost both of their opening Europa League matches this season and will aim to establish early control at home under Christian Ilzer. The Kraichgauers will look to build momentum from the recent victory over Gladbach. Olympique Lyonnais, managed by Paulo Fonseca, have produced strong results in Ligue 1 and begun their European campaign with two wins. Being the visiting side may increase the challenge for Lyon, but their current run has given the squad confidence.

Alexander Prass was the standout performer for Hoffenheim in the 2-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach; he scored one of the goals and bagged a crucial assist. The 25-year-old took the joint-most shots (3) in that match. The report notes he can control the midfield well and is also capable of scoring goals.

Pavel Šulc is listed as one of Lyon’s principal attacking threats after scoring in both of the club’s last two games. The 25-year-old is expected to be deployed in the final third once again for Olympique Lyonnais.

TSG Hoffenheim will be without Nathan De Cat, Albian Hajdari and Patrick Wimmer due to injury. Lyon will miss Nicolas Tagliafico, Mohamed Ouedraogo and Lois Openda. Projected lineups provided are: Hoffenheim — Baumann (GK); Coufal, Hranac, Machida, Rots; Avdullahu, Prass; Conte, Asllani, Hlozek; Leperle. Lyon — Descamps (GK); Athekame, Mata, Niakhate, Abner; Tessmann, Bidstrup; Boudache, Nartey, Duranville; Sulc.

Despite the home advantage, Hoffenheim face a tough contest and Les Gones might come out on top and secure three points in their upcoming Europa League match.

The fixture is scheduled for October 22 at PreZero Arena as part of the UEFA Europa League 2026-27 league phase; viewers in India can watch the game on Sony Sports Network and SonyLIV.
