India and New Zealand’s second one-day international in Wellington was held up on Saturday when the start was delayed because of a wet outfield, with the match due to begin at 7:30 AM IST at Hnry Stadium.

New Zealand made a late squad change before the encounter after Devon Conway was ruled out of the remainder of the series following a concussion sustained in a training collision with Matt Henry prior to the opening match in Auckland; left-handed batter Nick Kelly, originally picked for the fourth and fifth ODIs, has been called into the squad. Tim Seifert, who opened with Will Young in Conway’s absence in the first ODI, is expected to keep his place, while Henry has been cleared of concussion and is likely to return to the playing XI for Wellington.

KL Rahul and Daryl Mitchell were identified as key players to watch for the second ODI, with Rahul’s record batting between positions four and six since 2023 cited at an average of 63.7 and a strike rate of 97. The report noted that among batters from full-member nations, only Daryl Mitchell has produced numbers remotely comparable to Rahul’s over that period, and Mitchell made 28 off 41 balls in the opening match before being dismissed via a run-out for the first time in his ODI career.

India lead the five-match series 1-0 after the rain-affected opening game, a five-wicket victory in which New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs. India’s bowlers dominated that match: Arshdeep Singh took four wickets, Gurnoor Brar claimed three and Anshul Kamboj took two, with Kamboj earning Player of the Match honours.

Shubman Gill scored 37 off 56 in the opening encounter and was noted for his overall ODI record since becoming a regular in India’s setup in 2022, with 3,701 runs at an average of 66.1 and a strike rate of 103. The piece also cited Cricviz data showing that since 2024 Gill has been dismissed inside the first 10 overs only eight times in 26 innings, producing 519 runs at an average of 64.87.

Virat Kohli’s innings of 74 from 51 balls in the first game was highlighted for its effectiveness, including 29 runs from 11 deliveries when playing pull and hook shots at a strike rate of 264, compared with 50 runs from 41 balls by other batters attempting similar strokes. The coverage noted Kohli’s role in anchoring India’s chase in the rain-affected match.

The second ODI at Hnry Stadium in Wellington is scheduled to start at 7:30 AM IST, with New Zealand seeking an improved batting showing to level the series and India aiming to build on their 1-0 lead.
