India add seven medals on Day 8 of Asian Games 2026, tally reaches 37
India won seven medals at the Asian Games 2026 on Sunday, 27 September, taking their overall haul to 37. The day’s medals comprised five from athletics and two silver medals in squash.
India sit 12th in the standings with a medal breakdown of 4 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze. China continues to lead the table and has crossed the 200-mark in medals with 119 golds; Japan (157) and South Korea (83) complete the top three. Athletics remains India’s biggest contributor with 13 medals (six silver, seven bronze), followed by shooting with 11; squash has three, kabaddi two golds, and cricket, badminton, mixed martial arts, rowing, soft tennis, table tennis, weightlifting and wushu one apiece.
In athletics, Ancy Sojan Edappilly claimed silver in the women’s long jump with a best of 6.53m while Shaili Singh finished fourth with 6.42m. Sarvesh Kushare won silver in the men’s high jump after clearing 2.25m; Aadarsh Ram placed 13th with 2.05m. Tejaswin Shankar took bronze in the decathlon with 7,934 points; Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won gold with 8,123 points and China’s Chen Xinghua took silver with 8,012. Thowfeeq Noushad did not finish the decathlon.
Harita Bhadra earned bronze in the women’s 200m in a personal best of 23.20 seconds, with Unnathi Bolland sixth in 23.46. Parul Chaudhary secured bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase in a personal best of 9:08.67, while Ankita was fourth in 9:19.24. Several Indians progressed through rounds: Murali Sreeshankar (7.84m) and David Solomon Patturaj (7.62m) qualified for the men’s long jump final; Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan advanced to the men’s 400m hurdles final in 49.61 seconds and Vithya Ramraj moved into the women’s 400m hurdles final with 55.73 seconds.
Additional track and field results saw Animesh Kujur fifth in the men’s 200m final in 20.80 seconds, Nandhini Kongan sixth in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.45 seconds, Mohammed Afsal progress to the men’s 800m final in 1:47.37, and Krishan Kumar finish third in his heat in 1:50.38. India’s women’s 4x100m relay qualified for the final with a season-best 43.65 seconds. In the race walk, Manju Rani was sixth in the women’s marathon race walk in 3:40:17 while Priyanka was disqualified.
In squash, Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh each won silver after losing their singles finals to Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow and Sivasangari Subramaniam respectively, Abhay 9-11, 5-11, 5-11 and Anahat 4-11, 4-11, 7-11. The two results gave India its first individual singles silver medals in squash at the Asian Games. Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur finished ninth in the women’s 69kg with a combined lift of 204kg (94kg snatch, 110kg clean and jerk).
Badminton medal hopes ended on Sunday as PV Sindhu lost 11-21, 21-18, 21-10 to China’s Chen Yufei and Unnati Hooda went down 16-21, 21-14, 17-21 to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi; Treesa Jolly–Gayatri Gopichand and Dhruv Kapila–Tanisha Crasto were also eliminated in their quarter-finals. In boxing, Ankush Panghal, Parveen Hooda and Narender Berwal advanced to the semi-finals, assuring at least bronze, while Sachin Siwach lost 4-1 to Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto in the men’s 60kg quarter-final and exited. Archery’s men’s and women’s compound and recurve teams reached the semifinals and the mixed recurve and compound teams also progressed to the last four. India defeated Vietnam 3-0 in Pool C volleyball (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) and the contingent also featured across shooting, fencing, sailing, surfing, equestrian, sepak takraw, kurash and hockey.

Monday’s programme includes multiple athletics finals — women’s discus throw, women’s and men’s 400m hurdles, men’s 3000m steeplechase, men’s long jump, men’s 1500m, men’s javelin throw and women’s 5000m — plus women’s 800m heats, mixed 4x100m relay heats, men’s 4x400m heats and the women’s 4x100m relay final. In shooting, Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat are due in the women’s 25m pistol rapid stage and final while the men’s and women’s trap competitions continue. Archery will stage compound individual elimination rounds, squash begins men’s and women’s team competitions, India meet Afghanistan in the men’s cricket quarter-final and face Bangladesh in men’s hockey, with boxing quarter-finals, surfing semi-finals and medal contests, sailing, sepaktakraw, and tennis also on the schedule; India will take on Hong Kong in men’s Pool C volleyball.
