India beat China 1-0 in Japan to end 44-year wait for Asian Games women's hockey gold

India's women's hockey team beat China 1-0 in the final of the 2026 Asian Games in Japan to win the gold medal. The victory ended a 44-year wait for an Asian Games women's hockey title since 1982 and secured direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
India entered the 2026 final with a lingering memory of a 4-0 defeat by China in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games semi-final, a loss that cost them a place in that tournament's final and preceded a bronze-medal defeat to Japan. That Hangzhou reverse underlined the gap India needed to close against the continent’s top sides, and the team spent the intervening years gaining experience and greater consistency on the international stage.
India reached the Japan final after a 2-0 semi-final win over South Korea and faced the same Chinese side that had denied them a shot at gold four years earlier. The rematch carried the weight of that previous result, but India maintained focus through the build-up and the opening phases of the game.
China started the final with the greater share of possession, but India’s defence stayed organised and struck first when Lalremsiami produced a reverse-stick goal in the 10th minute. The strike doubled as Lalremsiami’s 200th senior international appearance and ultimately proved decisive in the 1-0 scoreline.
China were awarded a penalty stroke in the second quarter, which Savita Punia saved to preserve India’s lead, and India successfully challenged a later penalty-stroke decision. As China increased pressure in the final quarter, India defended compactly and held out until the final hooter.
Earlier in 2026 India had drawn 2-2 with China at the Women’s World Cup, a result that showed competitive parity ahead of the Asian Games. India’s path from conceding four goals in Hangzhou to scoring first and protecting a narrow lead in Japan illustrates the change in outcomes between the two meetings.
By winning the Asian Games title India not only reclaimed a continental gold last won in 1982 — the team had previously finished runners-up in 1998 and 2018 — but also booked a direct berth to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The guaranteed qualification removes the need for another qualifying tournament and allows the squad to focus on preparation and development for LA 2028.
