India’s best Asian Games rank remains second, achieved at 1951 New Delhi Games
India’s highest finish on the Asian Games medal table is second place, recorded at the inaugural 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi in 1951. The 2026 Asian Games are currently underway in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
India has participated in the Asian Games since the first edition in 1951 and has compiled a total of 779 medals: 183 gold, 239 silver, and 357 bronze. With the 2026 edition in Aichi-Nagoya taking place, observers have contrasted India’s best rank with its best medal haul, which are not the same.
At New Delhi 1951 India finished second overall behind Japan, collecting 51 medals: 15 gold, 16 silver, and 20 bronze; Japan topped that table with 60 medals. That second-place finish from 1951 remains India’s highest position on the overall medal table.
The 1951 Games produced several Indian firsts: Sachin Nag won India’s first Asian Games gold in the men’s 100m freestyle, Kanti Shah earned India’s first-ever medal with silver in the 100m backstroke, and Roshan Mistry became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal with silver in the women’s 100m. The Indian football team secured the gold that year, beating Iran 1-0 in the final.
The New Delhi edition is also unique in India’s multi-sport history: it is the only Games where India won gold medals in diving, swimming, and water polo, and it remains the sole edition in which India won any medal in cycling.
India’s largest medal haul by number came at Hangzhou 2023, where the country won 107 medals — 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze — yet finished fourth on the table that year. The article also records that India finished fourth in the 2022 edition, with 106 medals.
By sport, athletics has been India’s most productive discipline at the Asian Games, contributing 283 medals across 19 appearances, followed by shooting with 80 medals and wrestling with 65. India has won at least one gold medal at every edition of the Games to date and has won kabaddi in eight of the nine editions since the sport was introduced in 1990.
