India win four on Day 2 as China lead Asian Games medal table in Aichi-Nagoya
India added four medals on Day 2 of the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya on September 21, raising their overall total to six across the first two days of competition. Shooters supplied the bulk of the haul while team events and combat sports produced further podium finishes.
India’s Day 2 success came alongside strong performances across other disciplines and nations; the men’s badminton team beat Bangladesh 3-0 with Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty and Kidambi Srikanth all winning in straight sets, both table tennis teams defeated Pakistan 3-0 to remain unbeaten, and boxer Sumit Kundu opened his campaign with a 5-0 victory over Thailand’s Sinsiri Bunjong. China continued to dominate the programme, collecting multiple medals and setting meet marks in the pool, while Japan and other nations also opened their accounts in sports such as rowing and wushu.
In the men’s 10m air rifle, India’s Rudrankksh Patil, Himanshu Dhillon and Parth Mane combined for 1890.1 to claim the silver medal in the team event, finishing behind China’s world-record 1899.0 and ahead of South Korea, who took bronze. Dhillon translated that form into the individual final, scoring 252.4 to win silver, with Patil taking bronze; Olympic champion Sheng Lihao of China topped the podium in the individual event.
Suchika Tariyal secured a bronze in the women’s traditional 60kg MMA category after a 0-2 semi-final loss to Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo, a result the report described as adding a fifth Indian medal of the Games. Pakistan’s Asim Khan also reached the podium, earning bronze in the MMA -60kg category on the same day.
Team events continued to produce results for India: the men’s badminton side recorded a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh without dropping a game, and both Indian table tennis teams beat Pakistan 3-0. In the ring, Sumit Kundu began his campaign with a 5-0 win over Sinsiri Bunjong of Thailand.
The pool delivered notable performances for other nations: Wan Letian won the women’s 50m backstroke in 27.47, leading a Chinese one-two with Wang Xueer second and South Korea’s Kim Seungwon third, while Kim Youngbeom of South Korea broke the Asian Games record in the men’s 50m freestyle heats. India’s Srihari Nataraj finished tenth in the men’s 50m backstroke final, and Japan edged India’s sepaktakraw regu team in a close tie after India won the opening set.
China maintained a clear lead on the medal table after Day 2 with 23 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze for a total of 38 medals. Hosts Japan sat second with 8 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze, South Korea held third place with 23 medals overall, and Kazakhstan occupied fourth with eight medals, including four gold; Indonesia’s count moved into the mid-single digits, composed mainly of bronze medals. India are ranked 12th overall with four silver and two bronze.
Medal events in athletics, wrestling, boxing, squash, cricket, kabaddi and badminton have yet to fully open, leaving additional podium opportunities across the programme in the coming days.
