Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox was jeered by home supporters at Old Trafford on Sunday as they repeatedly sang his name with an obscenity during United's 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth. The chant came from a large section of the crowd and was heard on multiple occasions before full-time.

The reaction followed a public criticism of the club hierarchy by defender Lisandro Martinez less than two weeks earlier, when he said, "I expect more from our technical director." Manager Michael Carrick also faces increasing pressure after eight matches without a win — United's worst run since 2015-16 — and two defeats by three goals in the space of a week, and attention is shifting toward Wilcox's role at the club. Wilcox joined United in April 2024 as technical director after 15 months in a similar post at Manchester City and is a former England winger who won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1994-95.

When he arrived at United, club officials described his remit as working across all technical areas to achieve "highest standards of performance" and as being answerable to the sporting director. That arrangement changed in December when sporting director Dan Ashworth was sacked amid a difference of opinion over who should replace Erik ten Hag as manager. Ten months on, a run of poor results and discontent over recruitment have placed Wilcox under increased scrutiny from supporters and the media.

At Manchester City Wilcox worked alongside the club's current chief executive Omar Berrada and with Stephen Torpey, who United appointed head of academy in August 2025. Since joining United from Southampton he has twice received public backing from senior figures: on the first occasion around the recruitment of Ruben Amorim as successor to Ten Hag, when Ashworth lost his job while Wilcox stayed; and again 13 months later after Amorim publicly criticised interference around the club's formation and singled out Wilcox, with Amorim subsequently leaving and Wilcox remaining.

Those who have defended Wilcox point out he is not responsible for the club's transfer budget, which is set at a higher level. The club's summer spending was affected by Manuel Ugarte's World Cup injury, which disrupted plans to sell the midfielder to raise funds, and by Barcelona withdrawing from a £26m move for Marcus Rashford; United say both events limited available transfer fees and wages. Wilcox was pictured with the £70m signing Carlos Baleba when the midfielder joined United in August.

Wilcox speaks rarely to the media: his only extended interview since joining was on the in-house Inside United podcast in October 2025, and a month earlier he spoke at the 40th anniversary gala dinner of United's past players' association; there have been only a couple of brief exchanges with journalists in the last 12 months. That limited communication has left supporters and observers uncertain about why the club focused its summer recruitment almost exclusively on midfield rather than adding competition at left-back for Luke Shaw and striking cover for Benjamin Sesko, and with both players injured that recruitment strategy "looks like a major error," according to the article's reporting. After the Bournemouth loss Carrick was asked if Wilcox and Berrada should speak directly to supporters; he replied, "It's not for me to say who speaks and who doesn't speak, when they speak, and how they speak," said Carrick. "I know my role here is to speak to you guys and represent the team and football club as best as I possibly can from this position."

Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has not yet commented on the crisis at Old Trafford, while United supporters made their position clear during the Bournemouth match. United sit 16th in the Premier League and are without a win in their past eight matches, and recruitment is cited in the reporting as one of the larger factors behind their position — but whether Ratcliffe shares the fans' view and will act remains unanswered.
