Kieron Pollard has told Joburg Super Kings he will be unavailable for the upcoming SA20 season, a decision that came a day after Mumbai Indians confirmed his promotion to head coach on October 24, according to a Cricbuzz report.

Pollard had been bought by Joburg Super Kings for R1.5 million at the SA20 auction on October 7 but has now pulled out of the tournament, a development the report said removes a potentially awkward situation in franchise cricket given recent appointments.

The Johannesburg-based franchise is part of the Chennai Super Kings group, while Mumbai Indians’ owners also run MI Cape Town in the SA20; Pollard previously represented MI Cape Town in the competition.

The 39-year-old has a long association with Mumbai Indians, having played for the franchise across multiple competitions and been part of five IPL title-winning campaigns. He retired from IPL play after the 2022 season and remained with Mumbai Indians as batting coach until his elevation to head coach ahead of IPL 2027.

An MI source had earlier told Cricbuzz the franchise had no objection to Pollard playing for another team. "It's up to KP on the matter. We have given no instructions," the source said, comments made before Pollard formally communicated his unavailability to Joburg Super Kings.

Chennai Super Kings chief executive Kasi Viswanathan confirmed Pollard's withdrawal to reporters. "He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings," Viswanathan said. "We will now look for a replacement."

Pollard succeeds Mahela Jayawardene as Mumbai Indians head coach following Jayawardene's exit from the role; Jayawardene had guided the franchise to three IPL titles during his first spell between 2017 and 2022 before returning for a second stint. Mumbai Indians management had been working on Pollard's appointment for several days, finalising his name three to four days before the announcement, calling him to Mumbai for discussions on Thursday and confirming the hire after a couple of rounds of deliberation.

The franchise cited Pollard's stature and long-term ties to Mumbai Indians as reasons for the promotion, describing him as a franchise legend who commands respect in the dressing room, including among senior players. Pollard's elevation to head coach represents his first head-coaching assignment with Mumbai Indians.

Joburg Super Kings will seek a replacement after Pollard's withdrawal, and the fifth season of SA20 is scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21, 2027.
