Maddison scores on return as Tottenham secure first Premier League win of the season

Tottenham beat Coventry City in a Premier League match on 19 October 2026, earning their first league win of the season, and James Maddison marked his return to the starting XI with a goal.
BBC Sport published player ratings for the game and invited users to submit their own assessments, with the site noting how contributors had rated each player; James Maddison toned down his goal celebration as he is from Coventry and started his career at the club.
Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was given a 5 for fumbling a first-half corner and for not being strong with his feet, while defenders Tosin Adarabioyo (6) and Jan Paul van Hecke (5) were rated for aerial power and an uncertain night respectively, the latter losing possession for Coventry City's goal but making one brave clearance; Micky van de Ven received a 7 after a superb first-half tackle, and Archie Gray earned a 6 for a busy, creative attempt to influence the game.
Midfield assessments saw Sandro Tonali rated 6 with the comment "Occasional flashes but still struggles to justify his £100m price tag. Needs to produce more," and James Maddison awarded an 8 with the note "Brilliant strike on his first start for 18 months. Always prompting and probing. Revelled in his return to the starting line-up until understandably tiring." Andrew Robertson was given a 6 and Mohammed Kudus a 5; forwards Omar Marmoush (6) and Dominic Solanke (5) were also rated, with Solanke described as tireless but having little luck and being booked.
Substitutions for Tottenham included Conor Gallagher on 69 for Maddison (5), Mateus Fernandes on 69 for Tosin (5), and Ben Davies on 69 for Robertson (6), the latter described as an experienced head who helped close out the win and "got himself a goal"; Mathys Tel and Dejan Kulusevski were introduced late, while Dubravka, Senesi, Olusesi and Williams-Barnett remained unused.
Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth was rated 5 with the note "No chance with first two goals but a horror show for the third from Ben Davies," and his defenders Milan van Ewijk (6), Bobby Thomas (7), Ethan Pinnock (6) and Jay Dasilva (5) were assessed for long-throw threat, headed clearances, dependability and a booked challenge on Kudus respectively; Caleb Yirenkyi received a 5 and was booked for a poor challenge on Gray.
Coventry's midfield and attack earned mixed marks: Matt Grimes 5, Brandon Thomas-Asante 6 with a note that Van de Ven denied him a goal, Jack Rudoni 7 for "great determination to bustle his way through for his goal," Tatsuhiro Sakamoto 6 for dangerous deliveries, and Sidiki Cherif 6 for lay-offs and effort before hurting his shoulder in an awkward fall; Frank Onyeka (on 60 Yirenkyi) and Taiwo Awoniyi (on 60 Cherif) were both rated 5, with Ephron Mason-Clark, Gustavo Hamer and Kaine Kesler-Hayden also used later and Bentley, Simms, Mfuni and Torp unused.
After the window for user ratings closed, BBC Sport stated that the score displayed represents the average from all submissions by its users.
The result ended Tottenham's winless start to the Premier League season, giving them their first league victory of the campaign.
