India fast bowler Mayank Yadav claimed three wickets in the second T20I against West Indies at JSCA Stadium in Ranchi on October 9, 2026, but India lost the match by six wickets.

Mayank, 24, had been expensive in the series opener after experimenting with slower balls that West Indian batsmen punished; India head coach Gautam Gambhir urged quick bowlers to use their pace and said the youngster adjusted accordingly. “He is a fast bowler, and he should bowl like one. If you are capable of bowling at 150, then do that. If you are someone who bowls 120, then bowl at that pace. When you are a fast bowler, it is your responsibility to bowl fast. That’s what Mayank did, and that’s why he was successful,” Gambhir said on Friday (October 9, 2026).

All three of Mayank’s dismissals came from brisk deliveries. Kamil Pooran mistimed a short ball and hit it straight up off a delivery of 143.6kph, Shimron Hetmyer was removed by a 144.5kph delivery, and Rovman Powell was bowled by a 149.5kph yorker that uprooted his off-stump.

The crowd at Ranchi reacted as Powell’s off-stump went cartwheeling and Mayank celebrated with a leap, a moment noted in the match coverage. Despite the wicket-taking spell, India were unable to convert the bowling performance into a win.

Mayank also dropped a catch during the game, an error Gambhir described in measured terms: “This is cricket. People have dropped catches in the past, and people will drop catches in the future,” Gambhir added. The coach linked the missed chance to the eventual six-wicket defeat.

The fast bowler has shown the ability to hit high speeds and to learn from earlier mistakes, but Gambhir indicated there is still work to do on both his bowling and fielding. As Gambhir put it, Mayank’s way forward is to maintain pace and simplicity: keep it simple, and keep it fast.
