Misbah-ul-Haq quits Pakistan selection committee after seven Test players sent home without his involvement
Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has reportedly resigned from the Pakistan Cricket Board's selection committee after being excluded from the decision to recall seven Test players from England following the Lord's debacle, the development reported on September 1, 2026.
According to The Express Tribune, Misbah has submitted his resignation to the PCB, and a source familiar with the matter confirmed the development, saying, "Yes, he has sent his resignation to the PCB." Misbah will reportedly serve a notice period before formally stepping down. The resignation follows the PCB's decision to release seven players from the squad for the third and final Test against England and to name replacements for the Edgbaston match.
The PCB also altered its coaching setup ahead of the final Test, removing Sarfaraz Ahmed as red-ball head coach and relieving Umar Gul of his fast-bowling coach duties. White-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke have been asked to oversee the team for the Edgbaston Test, which is scheduled for September 9 to 13.
Misbah joined the PCB selection committee in March 2026 as part of a wider panel revamp. His appointment followed Aleem Dar's resignation after the T20 World Cup, and former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was added to the selection committee at the same time.
Sarfaraz had taken charge as Pakistan's red-ball head coach on April 18, shortly before the team's two-Test tour of Bangladesh. Pakistan lost that Bangladesh series 2-0 and then drew 1-1 with the West Indies in a two-Test series.
Misbah has previously served Pakistan as captain across all three formats and later worked as head coach of the national team. He had been involved in the team's selection process earlier this year prior to his reported resignation.
Pakistan are 2-0 down in the three-match series in England after defeats in the first two Tests; the third and final Test at Edgbaston from September 9 to 13 will be their last opportunity to avoid a series whitewash.
