MMA debuts on a mat at Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Sept. 22, 2026
On Sept. 22, 2026, mixed martial arts made its first appearance at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya and the bouts are being staged on a mat without the fenced cages common in professional promotions.
The Olympic Council of Asia chose not to align the event with an existing global MMA organisation and instead backed a new continental governing body, the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (AMMA). MMA has been listed at the Games under contact sports alongside ju-jitsu and kurash, and the OCA has sought a standardised, judged format drawing on competition structures used in other Olympic-track combat sports.
Organisers point to the wider Olympic combat-sport family when explaining the surface choice: judo, wrestling, taekwondo and karate are all contested on mats, and a flat, open mat is easier for referees and judges to manage. The mat setting also removes cage-specific tactics, such as pinning an opponent against a fence.
The competition retains the core technical elements of the discipline: MMA remains a full-contact sport built on striking and grappling, with fighters covering long range, close range, the clinch and the ground. Any multi-sport Games require basic competition safeguards — weight classes, clear scoring, referees, medical checks and anti-doping — which organisers describe as standard expectations rather than a formally published list of specific rules for Nagoya.
The professional model of the sport developed differently: the UFC launched in 1993 inside a fenced octagon with almost no rules. The phrase "mixed martial arts" was first documented that year in a television critic’s review of UFC 1, and as the sport grew promoters faced pressure to introduce additional safety regulations and secure greater mainstream acceptance. By the early 2000s, MMA had become a global business whose pay-per-view revenue rivalled boxing and professional wrestling.
Japan, this year’s host, has been a significant part of that evolution: Shooto was founded in 1985, Pancrase in 1993 and Pride in 1997, with those promotions inspired by the 1976 Ali vs Inoki exhibition bout.
India have already experienced both sides of MMA's Games debut: Suchika Tariyal became India’s first MMA medallist at the Asian Games, while Varun Sanyal, who made his amateur debut in July 2022 and won the Indian National Amateur Championships the following year, was ruled out after dizziness during his weight cut.
The AMMA rulebook is being applied for the MMA competition in Nagoya. The Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya will run until October 4.
