Newcastle agree up to £52m deal for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez
Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £52m to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez in the summer transfer window on 26 August 2026, the clubs have confirmed. Gonzalez made 59 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City.
Newcastle had recruited only players from the continent earlier in the window but identified a need for Premier League experience after losing Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier in recent months. Head coach Matthias Jaissle told BBC Sport last week that "adjustments need to be done and will be" as the squad is reshaped.
The 24-year-old Spaniard spent a season-and-a-half in the Premier League after joining from Porto and fits the age profile Newcastle have targeted as a player who can still develop. Gonzalez has publicly stated he "did not want to leave" the Etihad.
Manchester City have been active this summer, agreeing an £85.6m deal for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m. Gonzalez will be the fourth senior midfielder to depart City this summer following Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders; he was an unused substitute as City came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 in Enzo Maresca's first Premier League game in charge.
Statistically, among midfielders who logged at least 900 minutes in Europe's top five leagues last season Gonzalez led for high turnovers per game (2.13) and ranked in the Premier League's top five midfielders for line-breaking passes per match (12). Those in-and-out-of-possession metrics were cited in evaluations of his suitability for a larger role at St James' Park.
Newcastle have made six signings so far this summer — goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen, defender Amar Dedic, midfielders Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur and forward Bazoumana Toure — and the club's recruitment drive continues as the transfer window approaches its close. The agreement for Gonzalez was completed with the window set to shut on 1 September 2026.
