Pakistan players left waiting as PCB delays publication of new central contracts

Pakistan players are in limbo after the Pakistan Cricket Board delayed announcing new 12-month central contracts, more than two months after the previous contracts expired on July 31. The board has yet to release the new list or clarify whether it will be made public.
A senior PCB official previously said the board was not bound to release the names of contracted players. The board’s silence has fuelled speculation inside the set-up, and internal sources admitted there is uncertainty over whether the contracts have even been finalised or distributed.
The new deals cover a 12-month period and have attracted intense interest because of a reported policy shift. Rather than the traditional broad categories, players are reportedly being offered format-specific contracts — for example Test-only or T20-only agreements — instead of multi-format retainers. That change to format-specific offers is at the centre of current attention.
Historically, the PCB has promptly released the full roster and category breakdown to the media. The present delay has been interpreted within the organisation as a sign of potential friction. A reliable source suggested the hold-up stems from player pushback over format restrictions, as "no player wants to be restricted to one format."
This is not the first time central-contract announcements have been postponed. In 2023 the rollout was delayed after protracted discussions between senior players and former chairman Zaka Ashraf over financial packages and terms ahead of the World Cup in India, and the final list was eventually made public.
A subsequent clarification from another PCB official insisted the list would eventually be made public, but no publication date has been provided and players remain uncertain about the status of the contracts.
