Pierre Sage, Crystal Palace's 47-year-old manager, faces a fight to keep his job after his side were beaten 5-0 by Brighton on Sunday in the Premier League. The result capped a poor start to Sage's reign: he has won just two of his opening seven league matches and Palace have conceded 17 goals, the most in the division.

Sage joined Crystal Palace on a three-year deal in June and succeeded Oliver Glasner, a move that was widely acknowledged as a difficult assignment. Injuries and the absences of Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr — attributed in the report to a mixture of fitness and personal issues related to both players' desire to leave the club — are cited inside Selhurst Park as factors hampering his early tenure. There is some sympathy within the club for the situation Sage inherited, but that has been tempered by alarm at the defensive record so far.

Palace's defensive numbers are stark: 17 goals conceded in seven Premier League games, which equates to close to 2.5 goals per match and places them on course to concede 92 goals this season. The report notes no club has shipped more in a season since Sheffield United conceded 104 on their way to finishing bottom in 2024.

Squad upheaval since the summer of 2024 is listed among the causes of instability. Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise, Maxence Lacroix, Daniel Munoz and Marc Guehi have all left Selhurst Park since that summer, and the departure of sporting director Dougie Freedman in 2025 is described as keenly felt; the position of Freedman's replacement, Matt Hobbs, is also under scrutiny.

Personnel losses in central defence are highlighted as a material problem: Palace lost Guehi, Lacroix and Munoz within six months and, in the three centre-back lineup that started against Brighton, Jaydee Canvot was 20 and Honest Ahanor only 18. The club's summer defensive recruitment is outlined as Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben Chilwell and Oscar Mingueza arriving on free transfers, with Axel Disasi and Ahanor joining on loan.

Financial constraints are cited as a complicating factor for transfer activity, with Palace reported to have encountered major difficulty in complying with Uefa's financial rules; the sale of Daniel Munoz to Nottingham Forest for £22m is given as an example of measures taken with those rules in mind. Internally, there is awareness of the difficulty of the managerial market after Palace failed to appoint their first-choice target Andoni Iraola following Glasner's exit.

Co-owner and chairman Steve Parish is portrayed as cautious on managerial changes, having resisted action when Glasner publicly criticised the club's board for "abandoning" the team after the decision to sell Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January; Glasner completed his contract and added the Europa Conference League title to the FA Cup won the season before. Despite some behind-the-scenes sympathy for Sage, figures close to the club believe his short tenure could end if a suitable replacement becomes available.

Palace have a Europa League trip to Besiktas followed by a home Premier League fixture against Newcastle, and the report frames those matches as decisive for Sage: two positive results are described as offering a chance to change the trajectory, while two further defeats would increase the likelihood that the club will take action on his future.
